Simon Harding

Production Designer,
Financial Director

Simon is a Theatre Studies graduate of Swarthmore College, Pennsylvania (1999, BA Honours), with concentrations in design and directing. He trained subsequently at Ecole Internationale du Theatre Jacques Lecoq in Paris, and at the Kiklos Teatro Scuola di Creazione Teatrale in Padua, Italy, from 1999 - 2001.

Simon's interest in design was kindled by an apprenticeship with Robert Smythe of Mum Puppettheatre in Philadelphia, where he made life castings of actors in preparation for mask work, and designed prototype puppets from found objects.

His movement training is based in modern dance, which led to his receipt in 1998 of a Swarthmore Department of Dance Grant to attend the Fourth International Festival of Modern Dance in Bytom, Poland, through Jacek Luminski, director of the Silesian Dance Theatre. In 2002, Simon served as technical director for the North American premiere of the Silesian Dance Theatre's piece Straight Into the Eyes, at The Kitchen in New York City.

He first connected his movement and technical interests as the technical director for Pig Iron Theatre Company's Newborn Things and their Philadelphia Fringe tour of Cafeteria.

Simon joined SaBooge Theatre in 2001, as a designer and performer with their touring production of cozy, which included found object puppets created from golf clubs, telephones and chair cushions. He performed as a puppeteer on the company's remount of Mr. Web's Machine in 2001, and served as lighting designer, technician, ensemble collaborator and performer with the critically acclaimed Hatched in 2002.

He has also worked as a drafting technician for Showmotion Scenic Technologies Inc., where he helped to design and draft the Broadway productions of Aida (1998), The Rocky Horror Picture Show (1998), Jane Eyre (2000), and Little Shop of Horrors (2003), and the US national touring productions of The Sound of Music (2000) and Thoroughly Modern Millie (2003).

Recently, Simon has performed in Mum Puppettheatre's Seance, and designed the set and lighting for their original adaptation of A Christmas Carol. He also worked closely with Hiroshi Iwasaka and Mark Lord, designing lights for their groundbreaking production of Hamlet.

Current projects include design and technical support for SaBooge's Fathom, on tour starting this August.

Simon also serves as SaBooge's website designer.
